The Elections Secretariat has requested the Treasury for an additional Rs 2.5 billion to conduct the presidential poll as the cost for the election is expected to rise upto Rs 7 billion.
Previously, a sum of Rs 4.5 billion had been allocated for this purpose. However, the polls body had sought for more funds due to the record number of 35 candidates contesting the election.
Meanwhile, the Treasury has also agreed to allocate Rs 1 billion for the Elections Secretariat in its interim budget for the first quarter of next year.
The parliamentary election is also likely to be held by next February.
