News

The Attorney General today (May 24) filed a case against former Senior DIG Lalith Jayasinghe over charges of abetting the chief suspect in the murder case involving student Sivaloganathan Vidya, to escape police custody in 2015.

Charges were also levelled against Sri Gajan who had allegedly assisted the DIG in helping chief suspect Mahalingam Shashikuma alias 'Swiss Kumar' escape custody.

According to the Attorney General, DIG Jayasinghe had aided chief suspect 'Swiss Kumar' to escape on May 18, 2015 after he was appointed on May 13, 2015 to apprehend the suspects involved in the rape and murder incident.

However, the case was taken up before the Jaffna High Court as a special case following which the suspects were found guilty and were meted out punishments.

The case was heard before former Jaffna High Court Judge M. Elancheliyan, former Trincomalee High Court judge Annalingam Premashankar and former Vavuniya High Court judge Balendran Shashi Mahendran.

The suspects were found guilty after a lengthy investigation and trial which involved the assistance of the Criminal Investigations Department.

The Attorney General informed court that he expects to file four case objects as evidence while also producing 26 witnesses to prove his case.
