The Attorney General (AG) today (Jul 19) filed indictments against four suspects including an interdicted magistrate over a case involving the illegal possession of an elephant calf.
These charges were filed under 25 counts at the Colombo High Court in line with the Public Property Act.
Thilina Gamage, the suspended magistrate, the Wildlife Department’s former assistant director Upali Padmasiri, Priyanka Sanjeewani - another employee, and Chandrasena Bandara - an individual claiming to be the original owner of the elephant, are the suspects in the case.
They are accused of possessing an elephant named ‘Sakura’ without a legal permit.
