An airborne survey will take place by the end of this month to determine the amount of oil and gas in Sri Lankan waters, a senior official at the Petroleum Resources Development Secretariat (PRDS) said.
The senior official noted that a gravity and magnetic survey would be carried out with the assistance of a UK-based company. The process is expected to last for about two weeks in the waters off Mannar, Puttalam, and Jaffna.
Explaining the reason to choose an airborne mechanism, the PRDS official said that ships could not be deployed for surveying purposes due to the shallow waters in the Northern seas.
The data obtained through this survey would be used to prepare a seismic map in future.
