All spill gates of the Udawalawe Dam were opened upto one feet today (Dec 5) posing flood warnings to residents living downstream of the Udawalawe river.
The spill gates had been opened after the catchment areas of the dam had reached its spill level of 217,000 acre feet at 5 am.
Accordingly, water is being released to the Walawe river at 11,500 cubic feet at present.
Irrigation engineers have urged residents living in the downstream areas of the dam to watch out for any possibilities of flooding which could be caused due to the overflowing of the river.
