Aluthgamage's corruption case fixed for Oct 4 by Special HC

The corruption case against two individuals including parliamentarian Mahindanada Aluthgamage has been fixed for hearing on October 4 by the Special High Court today (Aug 30).

During today's hearing before High Court judges Shashi Mahendran and Amal Ranaraja, the Bribery and Corruption Commission which is prosecuting the case, handed over documents to the accused.

Justice R. Gurusinghe who would be heading the judge bench was absent today.

The accused was instructed to inform court, during the next hearing, whether they required more documents to be submitted by the prosecution.

Deputy Solicitor General Azad Navavi appearing for the prosecutors requested court to issue an order barring the accused from travelling overseas, since the case needed to be heard on a daily basis.

However, President's Counsel Nalin Landuwahetti representing the accused argued that such a request could not be considered since the President of the judge bench was not present.

Accordingly, court decided to consider the request during the next hearing.

The Bribery and Corruption case had filed a case against the suspects for causing Rs 53 million in losses to the government by purchasing carrom and checkerboards using the funds of state-owned retailer Sathosa during the 2015 presidential election campaign.

Former Sathosa Chairman Nalin Fernando has also been named as an accused in the case.
