With the support of the office of the Regional Director of Health Services in Hambantota, a nursing officer and two technicians have managed to modify an ambulance to enable it to function as a mobile unit collecting samples for PCR testing.
In the past, ambulances had to be deployed to bring any suspected COVID-19 patients to the dedicated ward for COVID-19 suspected patients at the Hambantota hospital, where they were then tested.
Built at a cost of Rs 85, 000, the mobile PCR sample collection unit enables health officials to go out and collect samples from people to be tested. This has minimised the risk of having any COVID-19 patients being exposed to wider society and also helped save money, Hambantota Regional Director of Health Services Dr A.T.M.D. Patabendige said.
