The Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has promised animal rights activist to introduce an animal welfare bill soon.
He had undertaken this decision after a meeting held with animal rights protection organizations recently.
During the meeting ,it is revealed that the existing laws were not sufficient to punish those accused for animal cruelty and accordingly it was decided to appoint an advisory panel to discuss amendments to the existing rules .
Secretary to the Ministry of Finance, S.R Attygala, Secretary to the Ministry of Mahaweli, Agriculture, Irrigation and Rural Development, Neil Bandara Hapuhinna, Secretary to the Ministries, Veterinary Officers, Department of Wildlife Conservation, Ministry of Health, Department of Animal Production and Health participated for the meeting held with the Prime Minister.
