Transport Minister Arjuna Ranatunga has sought the approval of the Treasury to recruit around 2,000 workers to the Railways Department citing it as an urgent need, Railways General Manager Dilantha Fernando said.
He explained that the Department of Railways had previously sought the approval of the Treasury to recruit these workers in order to expedite damaged rail line repairs.
However, the Treasury had not responded positively, Mr. Fernando claimed adding that the matter was taken up with the Transport Minister afterwards.
Mr. Fernando explained that the lack of workers has resulted in delays while repairing damages caused due to derailing and has inconvenienced the public.
Accordingly, Minister Ranatunga is also expected to table a cabinet proposal for the recruitment of these workers in the near future.
