Four suspects who were part of a gang who carried out armed robberies throughout the Western Province have been arrested. Police Media Unit said the suspects were taken into custody yesterday by the Mirihana Special Investigation Division.
The suspects had been involved in storming shops and financial institutions and robbing them at gunpoint, according to police.
Several firearms were taken into custody from the suspects' possession. They included one T56 weapon along with three T56 magazines. Two locally made firearms and two foreign made revolvers.
Police had also managed to recover two motorbikes and a car used during the armed robberies along with numerous items stolen during these robberies.
The suspects, between 30 and 34 years of age, are residents of Kosgama and Kotadeniyawa. They have been handed over to the Athurugiriya police for further investigations and are due to be produced before the Avissawella Magistrate's Court today.
