Residents of Aruwakkalu, Puttalam, after a 11-hour protest, allowed garbage trucks to dump waste at a sanitary landfill site in the area, after being promised a favourable solution today (Oct 1).
Some 30 tipper trucks were obstructed from entering the landfill by a group of protestors including area residents and Wanathavilluwa Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Samantha Munasinghe since last night.
Protestors complained that dumping waste at the landfill site could affect their health.
Tipper trucks which had begun their return and were two miles away from the location, had then been stopped by the Police who ensured to resolve this issue by speaking to the residents.
Wanathavilluwa Police Officer-in-Charge B. Pathirathna had met with the group of protestors and pledged to seek legal remedy by reporting the situation to the Puttalam District Court.
Accordingly, protestors had said that they would allow the establishment of a scientific method to dump waste at the landfill site, if a favourable solution is provided by the authorities.
