The Colombo High Court today sentenced two suspects who were cahrged in the attempted assassination of former president Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga in1999 to 590 years running concurrently for 30 years each. The sentence was passed by High Court Judge Padmini Ranawaka. A third suspect was acquitted of all the charges since the prosecutors failed to prove her guilty. Thirty eight persons died and eighty persons were injured in the suicide attack. Foremr president Kumaratunga sustained injuries in the attack and lost one eye.

Former State Minister Lohan Ratwatte passed away today while receiving treatment at a private hospital in Colombo, his family said. He was 57. Recently, he was admitted to hospital following an illness.
