Australia is concerned about the political situation in Sri Lanka, saying as a "long standing friend Australia is concerned by political developments in Sri Lanka," Foreign Minister Marise Payne was quoted as saying.
The Foreign Minister quoted by AAP said "It is important that issues be addressed expeditiously through parliament and that democratic principles and freedoms are upheld."
Australian Senator Payne urged all parties to respect the democratic will of the people of Sri Lanka.
"We encourage all parties to continue to resolve differences peacefully, and refrain from confrontation and violence," she said.
