'Awa' Group leader among six arrested over Kopai attack

A further six suspects wanted in connection with the sword attack that left two policemen injured in Kopai, Jaffna have been arrested by the Terrorist Investigation Division (TID). 

Police Headquarters stated that the main suspect wanted in connection with the attack was also among the six suspects who were taken into custody. Police identified him as Sathyavel Kathan Nishanthan alias 'Nisha Victor' from Thirunelveli, Jaffna. Police said the suspect is also the leader of the now notorious 'Awa' Group. 

The main suspect along with two others were arrested on Monday morning by the TID in Pettah while a fourth suspect was arrested on Sunday night from Mattakkuliya. The other two suspects were taken into custody from Jaffna last morning. 

Two swords were also recovered from the suspects' possession, police added. 

Further investigations on the arrested suspects are being conducted by the TID under direct supervision of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Pujith Jayasundara.
