The ‘Bak Maha Divuruma,’ initiative in a bid to eradicating drug use in the country will get underway tomorrow at 8.15 a.m. under the patronage of President Sirisena at Independence Square.
The national drug prevention programme titled “Mathin Nidahas Ratak” is being successfully implemented across the country with the support of all the parties, with the aim of achieving economic and social prosperity while accomplishing sustainable development goals, a statement from the President's office said.
The President believes that the illegal drug trade, which has spread like a major menace, cannot be controlled only through the taking of illicit drugs into custody by security forces, raids or taking legal actions alone and the time has come to eliminate this threat through initiating a broad attitudanal change staring from families to the whole of society, the statement said.
Representatives of all religions, members of the government and opposition members of the Parliament, governors of the provinces, chief ministers and representatives will join in taking the the Bak Maha Divuruma (National Pledge to eradicate the drug menace) to commit themselves to control and eliminate the illegal drugs.
This event will be live streamed through electronic media.
The programme launched under the guidance of President Sirisena invites all Sri Lankans to join together to make Sri Lanka a drug free country.
