The Supreme Court yesterday fixed for hearing the fundamental rights petitions filed by former Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa challenging the legality of the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID). The three judge Bench comprising Justices Eva Wanasundara, Priyantha Jayawardena and Upaly Abeyratne fixed the petitions for hearing on June 14 next year. In his petition, Rajapaksa cited 45 persons including the ministers of Cabinet, police chief N.K. Ilangakoon and Attorney General as the respondents. He sought a declaration that all steps taken in consequence of the gazette no.1901/20 dated 13.2.2015 over FCID are null and void and no force or effect in law. The petitioner stated that he was arrested and remanded for paying compensation and gratuity to Samurdhi recipients from the funds of Divineguma community based bank by the Divineguma Department.
