Cabinet approval has been granted to establish a new air cargo terminal at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) due to an increase in air cargo over the last few years.
Upto 280 million metric tons of air cargo had been imported to the country last year alone, Minister Arjuna Ranatunga told cabinet yesterday (May 08). He had observed that the amount of air cargo being imported into the country had increased by eight percent over the last five years.
The Civil Aviation Minister had pointed out that the airport lacks sufficient capcity to accomodate a large amount of air cargo thereby resulting in a severe congestion at the airport.
Accordingly, the cabinet of ministers after studying the proposal had granted approval to carry out the relevant procurement process required to set-up an additional air cargo terminal at the BIA.
