Bribery Commission files contempt charges against Namal

News

The Supreme Court  directed the Bribery Commission today to file contempt charges against UPFA MP Namal Rajapaksa on or before October 3.

The Bribery Commission  filed a case against the former President’s son on June 30 stating that the MP had failed to appear in court to give a statement with regard to an ongoing investigation.   The case was taken up today before a three-member judge bench chaired by Chief Justice K. Sripavan.  Raising preliminary objections over the case, attorneys representing the Hambantota District MP had argued that the Bribery Commission does not have the authority to file such a complaint. However, the Supreme Court rejected the objections and directed the Bribery Commission to file contempt charged against Namal Rajapaksa. The case was postponed till October 14.
