Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) today raided several shops in Pettah selling cosmetic items illegally.
Vendors who were selling cosmetic items such as creams and lotions, which have a high level of mercury content, were detected.
Cosmetics which do not mention a place of import or name of distributor were also found.
The inorganic salts of mercury are corrosive to the skin, eyes and gastrointestinal tract, and may induce kidney toxicity if ingested, according to health officials. Neurological and behavioral disorders may be observed after inhalation, ingestion or dermal exposure of different mercury compounds. (Pix by Sameera Weerasekara)
