Following complaints from the public, the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has started a series of raids across the country to seize low quality vehicle lubricants that are being sold illegally.
The CAA conducted 15 such raids yesterday, seizing large stocks of illegal lubricant products worth an estimated Rs 2.5 million. The CAA is being assisted in this campaign by the Public Utlities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL), the sector regulator.
A total of 13 companies have been granted permission to import, manufacture and sell lubricants under 22 registered brands in the country. However, the CAA says many unlicensed lubricants have now entered the market. These lubricants are of low quality and can cause serious damage to vehicles when used over a short period of time.
