The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has announced that it would conduct quality checks on food items which are being sold in Pettah during this festive season.
Teams of officers from the CAA will engage in inspection tours to detect sub-standard food, adulterated food, and food items which contain fake, defaced or misleading labelling.
Further, legal action will also be taken against traders who sell goods at a higher rate than the maximum retail price (MRP).
Meanwhile, three suspects were arrested yesterday (Apr 09) for selling bags of cement at an extremely higher value than the MRP in Gampaha. CAA officials who visited the business had discovered that the cement packs contained a fake labelling that had been printed in India.
The fake labelling had marked the price of a 50 kg bag of cement as Rs 1095 although the MRP stands at Rs 995.
