President Maithripala Sirisena's proposal to present a bill to Parliament for the establishment of the Institute of Environmental Professionals has received Cabinet approval yesterday (Aug 6).
Government Parliamentarian Harshana Rajakaruna had put forward a bill to this effect in February 2016. However, the legal draftsman acting upon the instructions of the Attorney General had proposed a few changes to the bill.
The Institute is expected to accept environmental scientists and professionals as a recognized profession, while creating a framework for their standards and ethical conduct, to interact with the global world.
Accordingly, the bill is to be re-submitted to Parliament in the near future.
