The cabinet of ministers has granted approval to increase the penalities on errant drivers in the near future.
Accordingly, drivers who commit any one or more of the ten offences listed out by the Ministry of Transport that are deemed as potential reasons for accidents would face a higher penalty.
A special commitee was appointed by President Maithripala Sirisena to examine a smiliar proposal which was put forward before cabinet previously.
The report containing the committee's findings were also put forward by Minister of Transport Arjuna Ranatunga before the Cabinet and the President.
