Cabinet has approved a series of proposals regarding the country's next census on population and housing to be conducted in 2021.
The population and housing census in Sri Lanka is conducted once in every ten years (a decade). Accordingly, in terms of the powers vested in the census ordinance, the Department of Census and Statistics has planned to conduct the next census in 2O21.The census reveals the data on population, its geographical spread, ethnic spread and the community scientific and social features as well as quality and updated data and information at grama niladhari level.
Since the planning process of the population and housing census - 2021. was affected due to the COVlD - 19 pandemic prevailing at global and local level, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa as the Minister of Finance, submitted the proposal to conduct the census activities as follows to which the Cabinet of Ministers has given their consent.
The proposals are as follows: The listing process of the census scheduled to be inaugurated in July 2020 to be conducted from January to May of the year 2021, conducting the census work (counting) for the census from June to November 2021, dissemination of the census to be taken place from November 2021 to May 2022, and to conduct the post survey on the census conducted to ensure the clarity of the information collected at the census stage to be conducted in the year 2O22.
