Cabinet approval has been granted to embark on a Rs 3.6 billion project to resolve problems pertaining to the shortage of water for irrigation and consumption purposes in Jaffna.
The project titled 'A river for Jaffna', would aim to reduce the salinity of water in wells surrounding the Vadamarachchi Lagoon, and increase the production of water for irrigation upto 8 million cubic metres.
President Maithripala Sirisena, in his capacity as Mahaweli Development Minister, had put forward a proposal, pointing out that Jaffna does not have a irrigation system to fulfill the needs of the people.
Accordingly, the President had stated that some 1300 hectares of fields and 300,000 people are expected to benefit through the project.
