The Campaign for Free and Fair Elections (CaFFE) has called for provincial elections to be held in order to safeguard democracy.
Issuing a special statement, CaFFE claimed that the President and the Prime Minister were conducting themselves in a manner to retain power instead of protecting democracy.
“The President is procrastinating over the polls by seeking the opinion of the cabinet to conduct the elections before May 31 while the Prime Minister is dreaming of a democratic front to remain in power,” Acting Executive Director of CaFFE, Manas Ahmed, was quoted as saying in the statement.
Nominations for the election must be called by the second week of April if the polls are to be held before May 31, Mr Ahmed was quoted as saying.
He added that the provincial councils which have not expired must be dissolved if the elections of all provinces are to be held simultaneously.
“However, there is no evidence to prove that such measures are being undertaken,” Mr. Hakeem said adding that the government was hoping to call for elections at a time which is favourable for them.
Further the statement claimed that the previous provincial council elections were held because of the people’s agitation and not the will of the government.
