A group of carpenters in Moratuwa threatened to go on a hunger strike if the President did not revoke his statement on the proposed ban on carpentry workshops.
The President's remarks on banning carpentry workshops and instructing carpenters and sawmill owners to find new jobs within five years met with the dissatisfaction of those employed in the trade.
Moratuwa Mayor Samanlal Fernando and several other councillors had led the protest. Western Provincial Counillor Morris Wijeratne and several other councillors took part in the protest along with carpenters.
It was reported that people from 23 Grama Sevaka divisions had joined the protest by holding banners and placards condeming the President's recent remarks.
