The case involving former DIG Vaas Gunawardena and seven others who are accused of abducting and beating a student from the Malabe Technical College will be taken up for hearing on April 25, 2019.
This was announced by High Court judge Shashi Mahendran when the case was taken up before the Colombo High Courts today (Dec 13).
Mr. Gunawardena who is serving a death sentence over the murder of businessman Mohamed Shiyam, was produced before courts along with his son Ravindu Vaas Gunawardena earlier today.
The case is being heard following a complaint filed by the Attorney General seven years since the incident had occurred.
The Attorney General said a student by the name of Nipuna Ramanayake from the Malabe Technical College was abducted and beaten between August 08 to August 21, 2009.
Accordingly, former DIG Gunawardena, his son Ravindu Gunawardena, his wife Shyamalee Perera and former officers at the CID by the names of Indika Pushpakumara, W.D. Priyanakara De Silva, Y.M. Tilakaratne, D.M.S. Sandun Dissanayake, and Shantha Vithanage have been accused of being involved in the incident.
High Court Judge Shashi Mahendran had announced the decision to postpone the hearing until April 25 after having taken into consideration the arguments presented by Attorney Darshana Kuruppu who had represented the accused.
The accused are also being represented by Attorney Chinthaka Udaneiya.
