In an unprecedented event the Catholic Church today held a memorial service of thanksgiving for the prophetic life of vision and work of the Ven Sobitha Hamuduruwo who passed away on November 8 after giving leadership to the common opposition which came to office in the people’s silent revolution of January 8.
The service was held at the Kotte, S. Thomas’ Church which is situated opposite the Naga Viharaya of which Sobitha Hamuduruwo had been the Chief Prelate for decades.
In the picture the Chief prelate of the Kotte Rajamaha Viharaya, Ven Aluthnuwara Anurudha Nayaka Thera is seen speaking from the church’s sanctuary to thank the Ven Sobitha Hamuduruwo for his historic mission and also to thank the Catholic church for this move to promote inter-religious dialogue and unity.
The main speaker was Rev. Father Reid Shelton Fernando also a social justice prophet who was closely associated with the Ven. Sobitha Hamuduruwo’s national movement for a just society.
The service was conducted by Father Sanjeeva Mendis head of the Kotte Deanery.
