CBK writes to President; Says SLFPers looking for leadership to uphold unity government's vision

News

Former President Chandrika Kumaratunga has articulated the disappointment expressed by many SLFP party organisers whom she met with following repeated requests to do so since October 26.

In a letter to President Maithripala Sirisena on January 11, the former President said that the group had sought advice from her since they claimed that they were confused in the midst of the issues within the country and the party.

Ms. Kumaratunga said that as per the letter addressed to President Sirisena on January 04, she had always encouraged them to stand with the party, strengthen it and aim to move forward with the same.

The letter emphasised that the former President was directly opposed to joining hands with parties that have been rejected by a majority of the people.

“The manner in which the country was destroyed by corruption from January 08, 2005 until January 08, 2015 has never been forgotten. We cannot forget that the people along with ourselves rejected these politicians following our intense battle in 2014” she added. In addition, former President Kumaratunga also said that she has attached a letter addressed to the President which comprised the suggestions of the SLFP’s electoral organisers on the party’s future.

Further Ms. Kumaratunga said that she is not against the vision and the outlook put forward by the unity alliance at the time of President Sirisena's appointment in 2015. Adding that the party looks to the President for leadership  and support to uphold the unity government's vision and work plan.
