Wednesdays declared holiday for public sector to save fuel

The Government today decided to declare Wednesdays as a holiday for public sector employees with effect from 18 March 2026, in order to reduce fuel consumption.

The Commissioner General of Essential Services Prabath Chandrakeerthi announcing the measure said that heads of Departments have also given the option of calling only the required staff to call over for work.

In addition to government sector employees, Wednesdays will be declared as a holiday for all Government schools, universities and courts.

He said private institutions also have been requested to follow the same measures.

All Government events too will be suspended until further notice, he said.
