The Constitutional Council today (May 13) approved the appointment of Senior DIG Chandana Deepal Wickramaratne to the post of Acting Inspector General of Police, the Speaker's office said in a press release.
Mr. Wickremaratne's name was proposed by President Maithripala Sirisena and had been sent to the CC for approval before it was approved during today's meeting chaired by Speaker Karu Jayasuriya.
The post of IGP had fallen vacant since IGP Pujith Jayasundara was sent on compulsory leave after refusing to resign following an instruction by the President in the aftermath of the Easter Sunday attacks.
