The Central Government has no constitutional power to repeal the power vested in Provincial Councils, Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarian M.A. Sumanthiran said yesterday (Jan 27).
Addressing an event in Jaffna, MP Sumanthiran said that the TNA has no need whatsoever to divide the state but instead is in need for power alone.
"No report concerning the proposed new constitution suggests the division of the state. It only suggests that powers be divided within a unitary country" he explained.
Further, Mr. Sumandiran said that there is no limitation of power on the Central Government and Provincial Councils. He added that the TNA was willing to accept the proposals put forward at an all-party conference during former President Mahinda Rajapaksa's government on such limitations.
The TNA MP then invited Mr. Rajapaksa to join the drafting of the new constitution.
