An alarming number of child molestation cases were reported during the last few weeks involving private tuition teachers, school teachers, school security guards and shop owners near schools.
This has led to the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) decision to strengthen child protection committees in schools. Selected teachers are to be trained and appointed as student counselors, complaint boxes will be put up in schools and continuous awareness and monitoring is to be done by the NCPA. Schools will be rated on the measures taken to protect their students.
Meanwhile in order to make sure compulsory education, all Grama Sevakas are required to submit details of school dropouts in their respective areas.
