The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested four suspects on charges of stealing nearly Rs. 570, 000 from a person by fradulently gaining access to his bank account.
The CID's North Western Province Computer Crime Investigation Unit had commenced investigations into the matter following a complaint made on May 29, 2024.
Police Media Unit said a sum of Rs. 569, 610 had been stolen from the victim's bank account.
Investigation officers arrested a suspect yesterday (14) over the case on charges of fraud, criminal misappropriation and breach of trust. Three others were also arrested for aiding and abetting the crime.
The arrested suspects are aged between 30 and 38 years of age and are residents of Dehideniya and Muruthalawa.
Investigations had revealed that the suspects had contacted the victim through an advertisment he had published on a website to sell a water pump. They had allegedly deceived the victim into thinking they were going to purchase the pump and had obtained the OTP connected to his bank account on the pretext of depositing an advance. After gaining access to the bank account, the suspects had allegedly committed the fraud.
The suspects are to be produced before the Wariyapola Magistrate's Court today (15).
