The cabinet of ministers this week granted approval to make certain amendments to the laws which are used to classify children and youths.
A proposal in this regard was put forward by Justice and Prisons Reforms Minister Thalatha Athukorale after considering the problems faced while categorising individuals belonging to both these age groups.
Accordingly, those below the age of 18 will be classified as children while individuals between the ages of 18 and 22 will be considered as youths.
Relevant amendments in this regard will be made to the Children and Young Persons Ordinance which is in effect in the functioning of Juvenile Courts.
