News

China has decided to extend their support in establishing a Fisheries and Aquatic Research Development Centre associated with the Matara-Mirissa Fishery Harbour with a view to promoting China- Sri Lanka cooperation, Fisheries ministry said.

A five- member delegation from China presided by the Deputy Administrator of State Oceanic Administration of China, Zhang Hongsheng recently visited Sri Lanka in order to make observations in this regard.

The delegation met with Minister Mahinda Amaraweera at the premises of the ministry where he mentioned that economic growth of Sri Lanka will be highly benefited by such a research and development centre at a time most of the countries are striving towards a blue economy based on marine resources.
Also with the implementation of this programme, fishers will be forearmed and given advance warning in marine disasters.

“On a previous visit to China, I happened to observe all the facilities made available in your institute and it’s a huge pleasure that China is willing to extend the technical support needed in establishing a similar research centre in Sri Lanka with the same facilities. We believe this will lead to the enhancement of scientific knowledge in Sri Lankan fishers on harbours and oceanic functions,”Minister said.

He also mentioned that this would not be possible unless the support and mediation of His Excellency the President and Hon. Prime Minister was extended in this endeavor.

Mr. Zhang Hongsheng mentioned expressing his views that the two nations enjoy a strong friendship and share historical ties that reach back for hundreds of years. Thus, according to Both Buddhism and Confusism mutual care and respect among friends is a virtue that need to be practiced and developed, said he.  The Secretary to the Ministry Mrs. Mangalika Adikari and the Director General of the Department, Mr.M.C.L Perera were also present to the event.
