A Chinese national who attempted to steal a diamond worth Rs 5 million from a Gem and Jewellery sales outlet in Kollupitiya was taken into custoday (Apr 02).
According to the police, the suspect had stolen the diamond from an employee at the jewellery shop by replacing it with a piece of glass which was similar to the diamond.
The Chinese national had arrived in the country on April 30, police noted adding that CCTV footage concerning the theft of the diamond was available in the shop. The suspect is expected to be deported from the country tomorrow.
