The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) today (Apr 09) informed court that it was in the process of verifying the statement provided by Admiral Wasantha Karannagoda pertaining to the youth abduction case in 2008.
CID Chief Inspector Nishantha Silva had informed the Fort Magistrate that investigations are being conducted into the statements which were recorded from the former Navy commander on four occasions.
Five suspects who are in remand custody over the abductions case were further remanded until April 23 by the Fort Magistrate upon a request by the CID.
Lt. Cdr. Nilantha Sampath,Munasinghe, Lt. Cdr. Chandana Prasad Hettiarachchi and I.L. Chaminda Kumara alias 'Annachchi', Dilantha Senaratne, and a boat owner in Meegamuwa by the name of Anton Fernando were among the suspects who were further remanded today.
A total of ten persons which include Lt. Cdr. Nilantha Sampath, Munasinghe,Lt. Cdr. Chandana Prasad Hettiarachchi, former Navy Media Spokesman D.K.P. Dissanayake, Navy Intelligence Unit Commandant Sumith Ranasinghe, L.U Kumara, N. P Wickramasuriya, T.I Dharmadasa, R.P. Kithsiri, K. Gamini, and M.A.T. Mendis have been named as respondents in the case.
The CID had commenced investigations into the incident upon a complaint filed by the former Navy Commander on the abductions of 11 youths between August 08 - September 17 2008 in the Kotahena, Wellawatte, Trincomalee, Batticaloa areas.
