Close to 4,000 Indian fishing vessels cross illegally into Sri Lankan waters daily, the Fisheries Ministry said today (Jul 1).
Accordingly, instructions have been issued to the Navy to tighten security around the island's maritime borders, State Fisheries Minister Dilip Wedaarachchi said.
He noted that fishermen in the North are unable to carry out fishing activities due to the large number of Indian fishermen poaching in the Northern seas.
The rise in Indian fishermen crossing Sri Lankan water has been monitored using the assistance of satellite imagery, the Fisheries Ministry said.
Accordingly, Mr. Wedaarachchi noted that the government will take swift measures in order to hold discussions with the Indian authorities in a bid to resolve this issue.
