Colombo and suburbs hit by surgical mask shortage

News

Pharmacies in Colombo and suburbs are reporting a severe shortage of surgical masks as people look to purchase them in fear of the coronavirus.

Demand for surgical masks has shot up over the past two days as several patients suspected to have contracted the coronavirus began to be admitted to the IDH hospital in Angoda. With a Chinese tourist confirmed as the first case of coronavirus in the country, people are rushing to pharmacies to purchase surgical masks, but say most pharmacies in the city and suburbs have run out of stocks.

Several people have taken to social media to say that prices of surgical masks also has gone up, with a normally Rs 10 surgical mask being sold at about Rs 30 in some places where they are still available.
