It was a historic day in Parliament today when the Constitutional Assembly, a full committee of the House, held its inaugural meeting setting off the process of drafting a new constitution for country.
During the brief meeting, seven Deputy Chairmen were named along with 21 members appointed to the Steering Committee with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe named as Committee Chairman.The Steering Committee is responsible for preparing a Draft of a Constitution for Sri Lanka.
The CA meeting began with Speaker Karu Jayasuirya who is its Chairman is briefing the House MPs the of task entrusted to them in the constitutional making process.
“This is a historic occasion with the MPs in this Parliament entrusted with the task of drafting a new constitution or amending the present one in keeping with the aspirations of the people,” he said.
