The Ministry of Highways is spending close to three million rupees monthly to pay allowances to 56 consultants it has hired to serve in several projects coming under the Road Development Authority (RDA), Parliament was told today.
Each consultant is a paid a monthly allowances of Rs25, 000 and Rs 40,000 as a monthly transport allowance, Minister of Higher Education and Highways told Parliament.
The Minister defended these appointments saying that the UNP had won with a majority of votes in the Kandy district and hence something must be done for their supporters in return.
He said the appointments are for a short term such as a year.
The Minister gave the reply in response to a question raised by JVP MP Dr.Nalinda Jayatissa.
