The passports of the President's former Chief-of-Staff, Professor Kusumdasa Mahanama, and the Chairman of the State Timber Corporation (STC) P. Dissanayake have been impounded over an illegal financial dealing with an Indian businessman.
Prof. Mahanama and Mr. Dissanayake had obtained a bribe of Rs 20 million after intially requesting Rs 540 million to grant approval for the purchase of machinery and land space in order to set up a factory in a land area purchased by the businessman at the Kantale Sugar factory.
The order to impound the passports was issued by Colombo Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne after considering a motion that was filed by the Bribery Commission claiming that the suspects were planning to leave the country.
Officials of the Bribery Commission had arrested the suspects while attempting to obtain the bribe at a leading hotel in Colombo.
