Court issues arrest warrant on ex-central bank governor Mahendran

News

The Special High Court today (Aug 9) issued an arrest warrant on former central bank governor Arjuna Mahendran in connection with the central bank bond scam in 2015.

During a previous hearing, Additional Solicitor General Priyantha Nawana appearing for the Attorney General who is prosecuting the case, sought an arrest warrant on the suspect by arguing that he had been absconding arrest by seeking refuge in Singapore.

The International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) too has issued a red notice on Mahendran.

Summons had previously been issued on the tenth suspect Ajahn Punichihewa who is also believed to have been absconding arrest in Singapore. Accordingly, court instructed the prosecutors to submit a report in that regard on December 4.

Ten persons have been named as the accused in the case. This include former Central Bank Governor Arjuna Mahendran, former Central Bank Deputy Governor Paththinige Samarasiri, Perpetual Treasuries Limited (PTL), PTL Director Arjun Joseph Aloysius, PTL Chief Executive Officer Kasun Oshadhee Palisena, PTL Chairman Jeffery Joseph Aloysius and PTL Directors Pushya Mithra Gunawardane, Chitta Ranjan Hulugalla, Muthuraja Surendran and Ajahn Gardiya Punchihewa.

They have been accused of causing losses worth Rs 10,058 billion to the government due to the illegal issuance of treasury bonds on February 27, 2015.

Charges have been filed against the suspects under Section 5 (1) of the Public Property Act. Indictments had been served on eight suspects who had been granted bail afterwards.
