The Code of Criminal Procedure is set to be amended to ensure that suspects or accused persons are produced personally before courts only when necessary.
Cabinet approval in this regard was granted following a proposal tabled by Justice and Prison Reforms Minister Thalatha Athukorale yesterday (May 08).
Suspects are compelled to be produced before court once in a fortnight according to the existing law, Minister Athukorale said in her proposal adding that this has resulted in undue attention being paid to such suspects.
Accordingly, steps would be taken to gazette the amendments to the Act following which it would be put forward before Parliament.
