A potentially decisive meeting of the United National Party's (UNP) Parliamentary Group is currently underway at party headquarters Sirikotha.
It is expected that the future of the party's leadership will come up for discussion at this meeting with the UNP group supporting Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa pushing for him to be appointed as the party's new leader.
However, a group backing current leader and former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is strongly opposed to the move and want Mr Wickremesinghe to remain as PM.
Meanwhile, a third group is pushing for Speaker Karu Jayasuriya to be appointed as "National Leader" and for him to lead the UNP's election campaign.
The group backing Mr Premadasa is expected to push for a vote on the post of party leader at this evening's meeting.
