The Customs has curtailed its services as some of its officers have tested positive for COVID-19 and 40 of them put on quarantine.
At least two customs officers on duty at the New Container Gate at the Ingurukade junction have been tested positive for COVID-19.
A statement issued by the Customs said that only essential goods including perishables, pharmaceuticals, bulk cargo, sugar, cement, fertilizer and requirements for BOI factories will be given priority while release of general cargo will be controlled.
Of the usual six lanes for traffic in and out of the port only six are been put into use while the number of persons calling over for various functions including clearing of goods has been reduced to 50 from about 500.
The Customs appealed to traders to co-operate saying that if the situation is aggravated the Port offices would be forced to suspend its operations.
