Officers from the Customs Preventative Division have seized a consignment of 294 kilograms of snuff (dunkudu) illegally imported into the country from India. Customs Media Spokesman Dharmasena Kahandawa said 30,000 tins of snuff, 1500 slippers and 200 kilograms of beedi leaves were recovered.
The importer had allegedly declared the consignment as textiles in a bid to escape heavy customs duties. In addition, it is prohibited to import snuff according to the National Alcohol and Tobacco Authority (NATA) Act.
The total value of the seized consignment is over Rs.8 million. The importer is being questioned and investigations are ongoing.
