The deadline provided for the registration of chainsaws which was set to conclude yesterday has been extended until March 15, the Ministry of Defence said in a press release.
However, the deadline will not be extended any further, the release noted.
Registration of chainsaws began on February 20 upon the instructions of President Maithripala Sirisena in a bid to control deforestation.
"Accordingly, all state, semi-government, private-sector institution or privately owned Chainsaw Machines should be produced at the nearest police station and a registration permit obtained before March 15" the Ministry announced.
A special license and a number will also be issued for identification purposes following the registration.
Necessary instructions have been issued to all police stations in the country.
